Brady Didn't Live Up To Values (Pg 13)

Erwin was interviewed recently and I thought you might want to read it. Thanks Yvonne, for sending this to me. Please read the whole article before commenting.

Direct quotes from this article (link below) talking about The Church on Brady...

"The great challenge for our church was that we said all the right things: We wanted to evangelize, we wanted to reach people for Christ, but we didn’t really do the things that we said we were going to do. There was a great challenge to transition the church back to live up to its values."

and...

"It was a great church; it was kind of a blue collar family church but it was more known for what it was against — like the movie industry, it was hostile toward people with AIDS, it was hostile towards the gay community. "

This kind of disinformation from Erwin McManus is why MOP begun, and why it MUST continue!

Thanks Yvonne, for sending this to me.

You're welcome Cris.

I've prepared a lengthy response to this particular interview which I will be posting at Solid Foods.

http://solidfoods.blogspot.com/

I'm still finishing up a few last minute details and double-checking my facts but I hope to have it up soon.

Dear Mr. Admin,

Thanks for driving that last nail in the coffin of this site. Since most, if not all, MOP heads are lazy cowards none of them will sign up for an I.D.

Long live Mosaic!

Mopisdead,

Do you really expect anyone to take you seriously?

1. You hide behind a screen name rather than OWN YOUR WORDS by using your real name.

2. You hide your blogger profile.

3. You use puerile sarcasm rather than bothering to take the time to formulate a well thought out and intelligent answer.

Yet you dare claim that MoP members are "lazy cowards?"

Uh huh.

Erwin continues to spew his misleading remarks. MOP has been great in revealing these remarks over the last couple of years. The question is why is there so many "Yes" people at Mosaic. It's truly troubling. I guess that's why MOP will continue trucking along. Matt

Matthew 5:24 said...

"McManus does not correct the CE interviewer's number, however; the number of "ethnicities at Mosaic" fluctuates wildly each time Erwin is interviewed or a new item about Mosaic appears in print. Here is a brief list of the various numbers that have been cited:..."

Yvonne,
What's the deal with these numbers? It's like the number of "hate" sites against Mosaic. That number 200 is odd. Besides the word hate. If you go against Erwin, your going to be smeared. Simple as that. Mop is the only site that naggs at the heals of Erwin. How many times have they had to go back and make changes because of topics brought up here. They should be sending you and Chris checks. Although, I guess we should just keep quiet and let the lies flow. He's got some whoppers.

Matt,

I don't know what's going on with all these strange numbers, I only report on what I find.

It does seem pretty weird though.

For the rest of the readers here, Matt is referring to a point in the second part of my response to the Church Executive interview with Erwin McManus. You can find it at:

Is this correct, or do those leaving comments on here have to meet Yvonne's requirements?

Because if they have to meet her requirements then certainly no MOP heads will ever comment again. Except maybe the occasional hard core Brady followers that pop on here from time to time.

Who is in charge of this comment thing? You or Yvonne?

I just read Yvonne's article about the Church Executive interview with McManus.

I found it strange too that Erwin said he dropped out of Seminary. Sort of like he was trying to be hip and cool with the rebel faction of Christianity. But, then he never circled back and told them that he re-entered and graduated from Seminary.

Very interesting. Is there anyone at Southwestern Theological Seminary, that reads this blog, who can confirm if McManus did or did not graduate from that school?

Who knows, maybe the guy hasn't done half of the stuff that he said he did. Stranger things have happened.

Good morning all,

I'm posting an item I found on the internet.

Thomas Nelson 2006 Fall Catalog description for “Soul Cravings”

Selling Points
- Powerful delivery captures Mcmanus' unique and widely acclaimed speaking style
- Down-to-earth writing becomes an easy entry point into spititual
understanding for new believers or non-believers
- High-energy pace connects with audiences with short attention spans

Target Consumer
- Emergent Church and Next Generation Leaders
- Seekers
- Mega Church Conferences

The part about "short attention spans" made me laugh.

Ah, I find this very sad. At a very low point in my life I walked through the door of Mosaic's new meeting in Beverly Hills. The people there were unlike those I'd run into at other churches: welcoming, seeming happy to be there.

I ended up working at the Beverly Hills location until it was abruptly terminated in April 2004. All of us Temple Slaves were simply told to fold the tents and steal away.

It was about time. I was tired of the go-go hustle. There was more promise of relationship than actual delivery.

Still... Erwin and other Mosaic people reintroduced me to God, and God saved my life that fall. I'll forever appreciate that. I would, however, feel a lot more confidence in Mosaic if I thought someone in Mosaic management could stand up to Erwin and tell him he's wrong in some areas. I felt this long before some friends, also feeling burned out, told me about Mosaic of Pain.

Hello all,

Last week, I found another Erwin McManus interview that included some more puzzling remarks about his "film company."

Trudatmusic.com

Interview with Erwin McManus
July 24, 2008
http://www.trudatmusic.com/inTRuview.php?i=44

When asked the question, "what about life brings you the most pleasure?"
Erwin's response was:

Oh man, I guess I'm old school in this, but my family does. My kids. . . I have a twenty year-old son named Aaron and a sixteen year-old daughter named Mariah and I just really enjoy helping them moving towards seeing their dreams come true. They have a band, my daughter is a songwriter and singer, called Glare of Rockets and they've been doing some shows at nightclubs around LA and different things.

And my son just finished making a film. In fact, he was filming in LA when I was filming in St. Paul because I have a film company. It's just fun to watch them and see their dreams come true. That gives me the most pleasure, I think.

Here is Erwin's response to a follow up question later in the interview:

Interviewer: What are you dreaming about these days?

Erwin: You know. It's a crazy dream. I started a small film company with my wife. We've just basically put ourselves on the line financially and in every way, but I would like to win every short film festival in the world and have our community to be known has the epicenter of human creativity. I want people coming to Christians, people who are connected to Jesus, and asking them how they know so much about humanity. How do you know so much about the human spirit? Why is it that you can tell stories that are so compelling, epic and true. I think the storytellers are the people who shape the culture and the future and so this is one of our great dreams.

Interviewer: Sounds good.

Erwin: We're not trying to do feature films. We're not trying to do blockbusters. We're just trying to do short films so that we can win the art community to Christ. And earn their respect and the right to be heard. So that's kind of one of my dreams right now.

What "film company" is Erwin referring to?

Is he referring to one of the four "Awakens" or has Erwin started another film company?

This is very strange.

The Mosaic LA Film Festival is almost here and they have finally updated their website.

Here is some of the new information available:

OBServe Art Gallery Auction
http://www.mosaiclafilmfest.com/artgallery.html

"West Hollywood, CA – Mosaic presents “OBSERVE: Mosaic’s Third Annual Gallery and Silent Auction”, a charity event held on November 8. Organized by Mosaic, the event features a silent auction of over 75 inspirational art/paintings dealing with purpose, meaning, faith, hope, spirituality, and humanity; many created in 40 minutes during Mosaic’s gatherings in the Los Angeles and Pasadena areas by local and professional artists."

In the past, Mosaic's "OBserve" raised over $3000 "to benefit several charitable organizations" by donating all proceeds to Awaken Humanity. (http://awaken.org/awaken-humanity).

In other words, Mosaic holds this art auction then "donates" the proceeds back to . . . itself?

Remember, until Mosaic's Executive pastor, Eric Bryant, actually follows through on the email he sent to me back in 2007 by filing with the IRS for separate 501c3 status, Awaken Humanity is still an extension of Mosaic.

Panelists
http://www.mosaiclafilmfest.com/panelists.html

At last, we find out who the judges are for the festival!

Among the semi-celebrity judges with impressive sounding resumes are two notable names:

1. Christina Lee

Christina Lee has been listed as the producer of several of Erwin McManus' film projects including "The Least of These", "Wide Awake: Short Film Series", "Nameless Moment", "Midnight Clear", and "The Select Fit."

Keep in mind that one of the stated "prizes" of the Mosaic LA Film Festival is to have one's entry included in the next Awaken film series.

Tje second notable name is . . . surprise, surprise . . .

2. Erwin McManus!

Erwin is described as a "writer; producer" for "Wide Awake: Short Film Series" and "Soul Cravings."

Question:

How do Christina Lee and Erwin McManus intend to handle the possibility that their involvenment in this festival might be construed as a violation of the IRS rules regarding "benefit to private persons?"

Have they even considered this possibility?

R.I.P. EMERGING CHURCH

The Out of Ur blog from Christianity Today published an item with the title, "R.I.P. Emerging Church" back in September.

http://blog.christianitytoday.com/outofur/archives/2008/09/rip_emerging_ch.html

Isn't it ironic?

What's even more ironic is this quote:

"As the emerging church rides off into the sunset, where does that leave things? Well, news has been leaking about a new network being formed by Dan Kimball, Erwin McManus, and Scot McKnight among others. I understand further meetings will be happening this week to help solidify the group. The still unnamed network has agreed to start with the inclusive but orthodox theological foundation of the Lausanne Covenant, and they intend to emphasize mission and evangelism. They appear to have learned from the emerging church’s mistake—define purpose and doctrine early so your identity doesn’t get hijacked. If they do their work carefully, perhaps the new network can avoid getting "wacked" in every sense of the word."

Evangelism, Innovation, and the Scriptures
November 6th, 2008 Eric Bryant Posted in General

A new community is forming….

There is so much we have yet to determine*, but this will be a community of:

- Friends, pioneers, innovators and catalysts who want to dream and work for the Gospel together rather than alone.
- Leaders, entrepreneurs, pastors, misfits, and artists who share a high view of Scripture and a radical commitment to evangelism while being faithfully committed to what is expressed in the Lausanne Covenant.
- Missionally-minded people from different backgrounds who use different methods in different cultural contexts but share the same experimental passion and risk-taking heart for serving, loving, and helping people connect to God through Jesus.

Remember the Church Executive interview? The one where Erwin said the following:

"The great challenge for our church was that we said all the right things: We wanted to evangelize, we wanted to reach people for Christ, but we didn’t really do the things that we said we were going to do. There was a great challenge to transition the church back to live up to its values."

and...

"It was a great church; it was kind of a blue collar family church but it was more known for what it was against — like the movie industry, it was hostile toward people with AIDS, it was hostile towards the gay community. "

Compare this to what Erwin wrote in his book, "An Unstoppable Force" p. 115:

"The church I came to in Los Angeles had a sub-metaphor for the church that was rather obvious. The name of the church was The Church on Brady. The name evolved naturally as the founding members invited the community to build a church on a street called Brady. Originally, the name of the church was The First Southern Baptist Church of East Los Angeles. But due to the fact that is was located in a dominantly Catholic community-not exactly in the South-where being a First Baptist Church was not prestigious, they found the name to be a liability. Those with a heart for evangelism instinctively started calling it The Church on Brady. This was a beautiful response born out sensitivity to those without Christ."

Funny, I thought Erwin said Brady didn't live up to it's values?

When I left Brady/Mosaic it was just as wildly enthusiastic about evangelism and sensitive "to those without Christ" as it had always been.

Hello all,

I subscribe to a few blogs and this morning I got an email with the following link to a satirical piece originally posted at a website called, "The Sacred Sandwich."

Keep in mind, it is a satirical series of "letters to the editor" on what sort of reader response Paul's letter to the Galatians might receive if it had been written in our times and published in Christianity Today.

Hello all,

Next month, (May, 2009) Willow Creek is sponsoring a conference in the UK called "Innovate" and Erwin will be one of the key speakers.
http://www.willowcreek.org.uk/event.php?r=15

Discovering the right answers starts with asking the right questions. Understanding and applying innovation requires you to put aside the status quo, as you discover, engage, question, and think.

Notice that Erwin's bio no longer mentions anything about his non-profit "Awaken."

Hello tonythetigerz,

Please check out my blog, Solid Foods at

http://solidfoods.blogspot.com/

I think you’ll find that the charges you leveled against Pastor Cordich,

“This guy has ALOT to say about a church that he has never been a member of, never attended, nor had any personal contact with the
pastor.”

. . . do not apply to me.

Oh and by the way, Erwin McManus’ church, Mosaic, is a paying member of Crescent Bay West Los Angeles Baptist Association so I don’t see what your point was in mentioning that.

http://www.cbwla.com/

[See: Church Directory - type in "Mosaic" in the search function:]

Both “Mosaic” listings are for Erwin McManus’ church, the address given is for the office space Mosaic rented before moving to the William Carey Institute.

Also, Mosaic is still listed among the Southern Baptist Convention churches.

Use “church search” function to find Mosaic. (The zip code is 91104)
